Biography

A wife. A mother. A community servant.

Councillor Maggie A. Lewis, Majority Leader

I am a wife, a mother and a community servant, but most importantly, I am a Christian. I thank God when I'm happy and I turn to Him when I am facing challenges.

My mother gave birth to me at the tender age of sixteen, yet she was strong enough and wise enough to teach me that I am not the product of my environment, my past does not define me, nor does my bank account, and no matter how insecure I feel deep down inside about whether I really have what it takes — I was called to do great things!  My mother's encouragement has gotten me through many challenging situations.

I was born in Columbus, Indiana but spent many years living and going to school in Indianapolis. After graduating from Columbus East High School my mother told me education was not an option - so off I went to Indiana State University.   At Indiana State, I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in Community Health Education and Master’s Degree in Public Administration.  Since graduating from Indiana State, I have solely dedicated my career towards serving the public and those in need.

When I am not representing District 10 of the Indianapolis City-County Council, I spend my days serving as the chief executive officer of the Boys and Girls Club Indianapolis (BCGI). Prior to joining BCGI, I supported the quality assurance and community engagement efforts of Indiana Grand Racing and Casino, and I have worked for a variety of non-profit agencies where I led all fund-raising efforts and developed collaborative partnerships to expand the organizations’ missions and visions.

My organizational involvement includes memberships in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and LINKS, Inc., and I'm a devoted member of Mount Paran Church.

While I spend my days working and serving our community it is the time I spend with my husband LeRoy Lewis, III and our son LeRoy Lewis, IV that brings me the most joy.  We like to have fun together.  Someone once said, "the family that plays together, stays together."  We love to play and have fun together. I cherish our time with all of my heart and thank God for blessing me with their love.
