IMPD Body-Worn Camera Pilot Program - Community Message

The City of Indianapolis announced at the beginning of 2019, IMPD and IUPUI are studying the feasibility of a body worn camera program for IMPD officers. This community-driven process began with a series of listening sessions, as well as a community and officer surveys, to learn about what is important to stakeholders in a body worn camera program for the department. This is a large and community-focused pilot of body worn camera technology.

Training for involved officers as well as a redaction team began this week, with the pilot scheduled to begin on Sunday, July 14th. For approximately 45 days, all officers and supervisors on the busiest shift in the largest districts – North, East, and Southeast district middle shifts – will wear the technology and provide feedback to researchers about its effectiveness in the field.

It is our hope that by conducting this feasibility study, we will be able to leverage collected data to make a collective and informed decision about bringing a body worn camera program to Indianapolis.  It is estimated that this program would cost between $2 - $3 million annually. At the conclusion of the pilot program IUPUI plans to host a limited number of follow-up sessions to publish feedback from the community survey.
